OUR STORY
"Wouldn’t it be great if there was an organization that preserves the history of stock car racing in New Jersey?” Friends and stock car racing enthusiasts Ray Shea, Bill Erbe, and Bruce Roslin came up with this great idea.
In August of 1991, a group of former stock car racers, car owners and enthusiasts gathered in Bill Erbe’s backyard. They shared the goal of keeping the spirit of the early days of stock car racing alive, especially the rich history of the sport here in New Jersey. From that initial gathering, the club began to grow. Officers were elected, the necessary legalities were accomplished, and the club became a non-profit organization. The club now consists of approximately 130 members from 13 states!
Keeping in touch with other members is important. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month (except December) at West Long Branch Fire Company #1, 379 Monmouth Road, West Long Branch, NJ 07764 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Guests are always welcome. In addition to meetings, each member receives issues of Vintage Views, the club's newsletter, sent out on a quarterly basis. The newsletter keeps members connected and entertained with articles, meeting minutes, write-ups of club events and lots of photos!
Racing from the past is brought into the present through the club's many activities. Although it is not a requirement, many club members own restored dirt and asphalt vintage race cars and bring them to display at scheduled club events. Cars are displayed at various exhibits and shows so admirers may see them up close, take pictures, and speak with the car owners.
The club is dedicated to the preservation of stock car racing history in New Jersey. In addition to race car displays, the club also honors past competitors, officials and others associated with the sport at an annual banquet. These individuals are nominated by the membership for “Hall of Fame” and “Pioneer” Awards.
From the early days, the club's Officers wanted to establish a museum to bring the history of racing to today's racing enthusiasts. With much planning and hard work, that goal was reached in 2001, when the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club Museum opened. The museum is located at Wall Stadium Speedway, and is open during Wall's regular racing season. Admission to the museum is free. Donations are cheerfully accepted.
This fledgling group started by a bunch of friends continues 30 years later. While some of our members have been around since the beginning, new members are always welcome! No racing experience is necessary - just a love of the sport and a desire to pass it along to others.
Yearly dues are $22.00, including a membership card, quarterly newsletter and associate membership for immediate family. Folks may join the club at club events, by contacting club President (see Contact page), or by downloading the membership form.
